Implementing a Heart Safe School Program

Empowering Schools to Be Heart Safe

Project ADAM Affiliate Programs assist schools and community partners in building cardiac emergency response plans that can be activated when every second matters. Our program leaders provide the foundation schools need to strengthen their readiness—offering templates, resources, and one‑on‑one consultation to support effective cardiac emergency preparedness and help prevent sudden cardiac death in the school setting.

The Project ADAM Heart Safe School Designation recognizes schools that demonstrate strong cardiac emergency preparedness through awareness, training, and a practiced response plan. Schools earn this designation by meeting the standards outlined in the Heart Safe School Program Checklist, reflecting their commitment to a safer environment for students, staff, and visitors.

Cardiac Emergency Response Plans (CERPs) are proudly supported by Project ADAM, the American Heart Association, Parent Heart Watch and a national task force of health and safety organizations.

This document supports the creation of a school/district policy and procedure for preparing and responding to cardiac emergencies and provides detailed guidance for responding to a sudden cardiac arrest (SCA).

The Protocol template is your onsite emergency action plan (EAP) specified for your facility to detail what happens immediately upon a sudden collapse. Project ADAM recommends using this as a one-to-two-page quick reference document to instruct your response team on your building’s specific plan and their role.

Sharing your School CERP with additional groups

Project ADAM encourages your school to share your school cardiac emergency response plan and AED locations with groups that utilize your facility after normal school day hours. In addition to these groups, you may consider sharing your plan with local EMS and parents.
